A generated transcript is not a caption file

Two things get conflated here. Pulling YouTube's own caption track gives you whatever the uploader supplied, which is sometimes hand-corrected and sometimes machine output nobody checked. Generating a fresh transcript runs the audio through our own model, which reported a mean confidence of 0.972 across 1,224 videos as of 27 July 2026.

Generating fresh is usually better, with one honest exception: a transcript the creator corrected by hand will beat any model on names and jargon, because a human knew how those words were spelled and the model is guessing from sound.

Language coverage is uneven and the numbers say so. English accounts for 1,180 of our processed videos and Hindi 31, at 0.972 and 0.973 confidence. Everything else is in single digits, so treat confidence figures for other languages as unproven rather than promised. If you are downloading a transcript to repurpose into an article or show notes, budget a proofread pass for proper nouns — that is where the remaining errors live, and a confidence score will not point them out for you.
