Of 1,224 source videos processed as of 27 July 2026, 1,212 arrived as a YouTube URL and only 12 as a direct file upload. Pasting a link is what people actually do, so that is the path we optimise: no download, no re-encode on your machine, no waiting on an upload from a hotel connection.

It also sets a real constraint worth stating plainly. A URL only works if the video is public or unlisted. Private videos, members-only content, and anything region-blocked in our processing region will fail, and the honest fix in those cases is to upload the file.

On timing, a 5 to 15 minute video reaches finished Shorts in a median of 2.8 minutes, and something over half an hour takes around 5.5 minutes. Clips land at a median of 42 seconds, comfortably inside the under-60-second window Shorts rewards, though the pipeline will go to 180 seconds when a segment genuinely needs the room.
