What is a headline match cut?
A headline match cut is a short text animation where one highlighted phrase stays fixed in the frame while the newspaper or article page behind it changes every few frames. Because the phrase never moves, your eye locks onto it, and the changing layouts give the clip its rhythm.
Creators use it as a hook in the first second of a short, as a title card between sections, or as a punchline beat after a setup line. The generator above makes that beat from any phrase you type, with ten generic page layouts, a yellow highlight and a motion blur that fades from the headline outward.
How to make a headline match cut
- 1
Type your words
Use one to four words, up to 40 characters, or tap one of the example phrases. Short phrases read best because they stay on one line.
- 2
Pick an aspect ratio
9:16 for Shorts, Reels and TikTok, 1:1 for feed posts, 16:9 for YouTube and landscape edits.
- 3
Check the cut
Press play or drag the timeline to see the highlight hold still while the page changes. Use the text size slider if the phrase feels too small or too large.
- 4
Choose a format and export
Pick MP4, WebM, MOV or GIF, then click Export. The file downloads to your device. Drop it on the track above your footage.

What it does not do
- It is one effect. There is a single animation style and a fixed three second length.
- You cannot pick fonts, highlight colours or the layouts. Only the text, ratio and text size change.
- The clip has no audio, and the GIF is half size with a limited colour palette.
- Browsers differ. A video format your browser cannot encode is disabled, and the mark in the corner stays on every free export.
Why a clipping tool ships a text effect
ScaleReach turns long videos into short clips. A good short usually opens with a hook or lands a line, and a three second text beat is one of the cheapest ways to make that line hit. This generator covers that one beat so you do not need an editor open for it.
It is a single effect, not a video editor. For anything longer, such as finding the best moments in an hour of footage, captioning them and reframing to vertical, that is what the AI video clip generator does.

Headline match cut
A match cut keeps one element fixed while everything around it changes. In a headline match cut, your phrase stays in the same spot, highlighted, while the newspaper layout behind it switches every fraction of a second.
Three seconds. Your phrase stays highlighted in the same spot while the page behind it cuts to a new layout about every 0.3 seconds by default, ten layouts in total. The Speed slider changes the cut pace and the Motion blur slider sets how much the page streaks.
Up to 40 characters. The phrase always sits on one line, and the text shrinks to fit if it is too wide for the frame, so short phrases of one to four words read best.
No. The ten layouts mix sans-serif, serif and monospace headlines, and the highlight is always yellow. You can change the text, the aspect ratio and the text size.
Export and privacy
Full HD. 9:16 exports at 1080 x 1920, 1:1 at 1080 x 1080 and 16:9 at 1920 x 1080, recorded at 30 fps. The on-page preview runs at a lower resolution so editing stays smooth, and the full HD page templates load only when you export.
No. The animation is drawn on a canvas in your browser and recorded there. Your text never leaves the page.
MP4 (H.264), WebM (VP9), MOV (H.264) and GIF. MP4 plays almost everywhere and is the safest choice for editors and social apps. WebM suits web use, MOV suits Final Cut and QuickTime workflows, and GIF is a small silent loop that works anywhere a video will not.
MP4, WebM and MOV are encoded in your browser with its built-in video encoder, and not every browser or device offers every codec. A format your browser cannot encode is disabled. GIF does not need a video encoder, so it is always available.
GIFs are exported at half the video size, for example 540 x 960 for 9:16, to keep the file small. They loop forever and cycle through the layouts at your chosen Speed (0.3 seconds each by default). Use MP4 if you need the full 1080p.
A few seconds. The ten layouts are prepared first, then the frames are encoded in your browser without waiting for the clip to play in real time.
Yes, a small scalereach.ai mark sits in the bottom corner of the frame. You can crop it out in your editor, or keep it.
No. The export is video only. Add music or a sound effect in your editor.
Using it in a video
It is free and there is no sign-up. Type a phrase, export, and the file downloads straight to your device.
No. The mastheads, kickers and columns are generic, made-up placeholders, so the clip does not reproduce any real publication or website.
Import the file like any other video clip. Place it on the track above your footage as a title card, or cut it in between two clips as a punchline beat.
Drop it in as a title card or a punchline beat. If you are still working out which moments of a long video deserve a card like this, ScaleReach finds and clips them for you.
