The gap between "highlight detection" as marketed and as experienced is expectations. Across 1,224 videos measured on 27 July 2026, a 15 to 30 minute source returned an average of 5.4 highlights and a source over an hour returned 18. Those are candidates to review, and some of them will be wrong.

Automatic detection is good at finding structural signals — a change in delivery, a question and answer pair, a laugh, a number being cited. It is bad at knowing what your audience already heard last week, or that the segment you care about is the boring one where the actual news is. Nothing in the transcript tells it that.

Detected highlights come out at a median of 42 seconds, ranging from 5 to 180. Expect to keep somewhere between a third and half of what you are shown on a first pass. That is still a large saving over scrubbing a 22-minute timeline by hand, which is the average length of what people actually submit.
